To Have and To Hold

Carissa and Cameron awoke, hand in hand, on the chaise in the bridal preparation room in the church. Carissa was immediately swept into her mother’s arms. Macara broke her link with Cameron with a magical incantation while Holly helped the two of them stand.

It was disorienting to be back in a body. Carissa felt heavier, noticing the weight of her physical being for the first time. But as she stood, she noticed something else.

“My magic It’s gone.” Carissa put a hand over her chest, feeling the thud of her heartbeat but sensing no magic in her veins. She had only discovered her Tuatha de Danann magic recently, but her elf-light was a part of her. She’d never felt so empty.

She wanted to ask Cameron, Maren, or Nan if this is what it was like for them. Being human, they’d never known the sensation of light-magic coursing through them. It was a rhythm, a lightness of foot, and an energy that flowed through her and around her. It connected her to the natural world in ways she’d never fully appreciated. Without it, she felt disconnected…lost.

Cameron looked at Macara and Raven in turn.

Raven put her hands up. “You were convulsing. We had to take a chance.”

Macara said, “We had to seal the talisman’s power, which, in turn, sealed your magic, too. You have no magic right now, Carissa. I’m sorry.”

“You said that would kill her!” Cameron cried.

Raven replied, “And if she were any other fae, she would be dead. But she is part human. That part is sustaining her now. With luck, it will be able to keep her alive long enough to save her.”

“But, without my magic, won’t the tonic still kill me?”

Holly explained, “All the magic in your body is locked. That includes what was in the spell that was enhancing the ingredients in the tonic. Without the tonic’s magic, its ingredients are harmless. All we have to do is wait. Once the tonic is out of your body, you should be safe and we should, theoretically, be able to unlock your magic and remove the talisman.”

“Raven, what did you mean her human half has to keep her alive long enough to save her? Is there a chance she’ll die before the tonic can leave her system?” Cameron asked.

Macara answered, “No fae has ever lived without any magic. We don’t know how long the human part of Carissa can keep the rest of her alive.”

Carissa said, “I’ve never felt like this before. Even when I didn’t know how to use it, I’ve always felt my magic in me. I feel strange without it.”

“Feeling anything is good. It means you’re still alive,” Raven said.

The thought of her being alive made Carissa think of Alden, and how he had been less fortunate. “Alden is still out there, unprotected.”

Raven waved a hand, “Chaos, Hiya and Cynth have gone to find him. He’ll be fine.”

“They’re just sprites. They could be in danger, too.”

Raven scoffed, offended. “You should know better than anyone the might sprites possess when pressed.
